The idea of the combo plate was first coined by Otis Farnsworth in the 1900s, born out of the Tex-Mex boom in his restaurant called The Original Mexican Restaurant in San Antonio. His combination of beans, rice, and an entree became known as “The Regular,” and from there, the combo plate was replicated in many restaurants. Hearty, comforting dishes influenced by Northern Mexican flavors, the combo plate spread across the nation quickly, evolving with the various tastes and preferences of the cooks who create them.
At La Mesa Mexican Restaurant, we have our own twist on the combo plate. In fact, we created an entire menu dedicated to it! What Are the Healthiest Combination Options?
Many diners want healthy options when dining out. La Mesa’s Build-Your-Own Combo menu has great options for healthier dishes. Here are a few ideas for healthier options in our menu:
- Instead of refried beans and rice, opt for black beans and steamed vegetables.
- Get the sauces on the side whenever possible. A Camaron taco (choose a soft flour or corn shell instead of the deep fried) is delicious and healthy with grilled shrimp, cabbage, and tomatoes. Opt for the cream sauce on the side and pair it with side salad!
- Choose beans! Order a burrito or enchilada with beans instead of beef, pork, or cheese. A side of black beans is packed with fiber and is a nutritional powerhouse!
- Our pico de gallo is fresh made and extremely healthy. Opt for this delicious salsa as a topping instead of sour cream or cheese. Guacamole is also a tasty option packed with the healthy fat found in avocados. This can be a high calorie dish, however, so use portions accordingly.
- If you must have meat, opt for chicken in your taco instead of beef. Save on calories and still get awesome flavor!
